What is Down syndrome also known as?

Down syndrome is sometimes referred to as Trisomy 21, which directly describes the genetic cause: the presence of three copies of chromosome 21 instead of the usual two.

This is the most common type, accounting for about 95% of all cases. Less common forms include Mosaic Down syndrome and Translocation Down syndrome. Historically, it was also called "Mongolism," but this term is now considered outdated and offensive and is no longer used.

Using respectful and accurate terms such as "Down syndrome" or "Trisomy 21" ensures dignity and inclusion for people with the condition.
