What is dysgraphia?

Dysgraphia is a neurological learning difficulty that affects writing skills, making it challenging for children and adults to organise their thoughts on paper, form letters correctly, or maintain consistent handwriting. It is not due to lack of intelligence or effort but rather differences in the way the brain processes written expression.

Dysgraphia can appear on its own or alongside other conditions such as ADHD or dyslexia. People with dysgraphia may struggle with spelling, grammar, and organising ideas, even if they can verbally express themselves well. In Australia, dysgraphia is recognised as a specific learning disorder that may require educational adjustments or therapy support.
