What is global developmental delay in children?
Global Developmental Delay (GDD) in children refers to a condition where a child experiences delays in reaching age-appropriate developmental milestones in two or more areas.
These areas include:
1. Gross and fine motor skills (e.g. crawling, walking, grasping),
2. Speech and language,
3. Cognitive abilities (thinking, reasoning, problem-solving),
4. Social and emotional development. GDD is generally diagnosed in children under
5 years of age, and it may be temporary or linked to a longer-term disability. In Australia, children with GDD may be eligible for early intervention supports under the NDIS.
