What is global developmental delay vs autism?

Global Developmental Delay (GDD) and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are both developmental conditions but have key differences in diagnosis, cause, and treatment.

Global Developmental Delay (GDD):
• Diagnosis is made before age 5
• Involves significant delays in two or more areas (e.g. speech, motor skills, learning)
• Often used as a temporary or early diagnosis

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD):
• Can be diagnosed from 18 months onward
• Involves difficulties with social interaction, communication, and repetitive behaviours
• Not always associated with general developmental delay

A child can be diagnosed with both conditions. GDD may be the first step toward recognising autism, especially when signs become clearer with age.
