What is OCD (in practical terms)?

In practical terms, OCD means living with recurrent, unwanted thoughts (obsessions) that cause anxiety, and feeling the need to perform repetitive actions or mental rituals (compulsions) to ease that anxiety. Examples include:
• Washing hands repeatedly due to fear of germs
• Checking locks over and over for safety
• Arranging items until they “feel right”
• Silently counting or repeating phrases to prevent a feared outcome
While these behaviours can temporarily relieve distress, they often take up significant time and affect daily life.
