What is Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD)?

Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) is a condition where the brain has difficulty receiving, processing, and responding to information from the senses. This includes sight, sound, touch, taste, smell, movement, and body awareness.

Children with SPD may overreact or underreact to everyday sensory input, making daily activities challenging. SPD is not classified as a standalone diagnosis in the DSM-5 but is widely recognised in occupational therapy and developmental care. It often overlaps with conditions like autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or ADHD.
