What is the difference between ARFID and anorexia?

ARFID and anorexia are both eating disorders but have very different features.

  • ARFID – Restriction is due to fear of choking, sensory sensitivities, or lack of interest in food. There are no body image concerns.
  • Anorexia Nervosa – Restriction is driven by fear of gaining weight, body image disturbance, and a desire to be thin.

Both can result in malnutrition and weight loss, but treatment approaches differ. In Australia, ARFID is often supported through psychology, occupational therapy, and dietetics, while anorexia treatment may involve specialist eating disorder services.
