What is the difference between bipolar disorder 1 and 2?

The main difference between the two types is the severity of manic episodes:

  • Bipolar I: Involves at least one full manic episode lasting 7+ days or requiring hospitalisation. Depressive episodes are common but not necessary for diagnosis.
  • Bipolar II: Involves hypomanic episodes (less severe than mania) and major depressive episodes.

Bipolar I is generally more disruptive due to mania, while bipolar II often involves more frequent depression. Both require professional treatment to manage symptoms effectively.
