What is the link between ADHD and bipolar disorder?

ADHD and bipolar disorder can share similar symptoms, such as impulsivity, distractibility, and mood changes, which sometimes leads to misdiagnosis. However, bipolar disorder involves episodic mood shifts (manic and depressive phases), while ADHD is more consistent in symptoms of attention and hyperactivity.

Research shows a higher rate of ADHD in people with bipolar disorder, and both conditions can occur together. When comorbid, they may increase challenges in school, work, and relationships, making treatment more complex. Careful assessment by a psychiatrist is needed to distinguish between the two.
