When do children get diagnosed with oppositional defiant disorder?
Children are often diagnosed with ODD in the early school years, typically between ages 6 and 8, although symptoms may appear earlier. A diagnosis is usually made once behaviours have persisted for at least 6 months and are significantly impacting the child’s ability to function at home, school, or in the community. In some cases, diagnosis happens later if symptoms are mistaken for “typical misbehaviour” during preschool years.
The sooner a diagnosis is made, the earlier parents and carers can access support and create positive change.
