When does bipolar disorder develop?

Bipolar disorder usually develops in the late teenage years or early adulthood, though it can appear earlier or later. The average age of onset is around 18–25 years, but symptoms may be overlooked in young people and mistaken for typical moodiness.

In some cases, bipolar disorder first appears after major stress, trauma, or changes such as childbirth. Children can develop bipolar disorder, though this is less common and requires careful diagnosis by a specialist. Recognising symptoms early allows for treatment that can significantly improve long-term outcomes.
