When does oppositional defiant disorder start?

ODD often begins in early childhood, with symptoms sometimes appearing as young as preschool age (3–5 years old). It is more noticeable when children start school and begin interacting with teachers and peers, as defiant or argumentative behaviours become harder to manage.

While early signs may be overlooked as “just testing boundaries,” persistence, intensity, and disruption across different settings indicate ODD. Without support, symptoms can intensify and lead to more severe behavioural or emotional challenges in adolescence.

Early intervention can help children build resilience and positive behaviour strategies. Book a consultation now to learn how.
