When does selective mutism start?

Selective mutism generally starts between the ages of 3 and 6, when children first encounter social environments outside their family circle. Parents may notice that their child is talkative at home but completely silent in settings such as preschool, kindergarten, or social gatherings.

Warning signs that mutism may be starting include:
  • Extreme shyness or clinginess in public
  • Difficulty answering questions from unfamiliar adults
  • Frozen posture or limited facial expression when expected to speak
  • Reliance on non-verbal communication like nodding or pointing.
Recognising the condition early allows families to access professional support and, in many cases, NDIS-funded therapy services. Contact us now.
