When dyslexia can be diagnosed?
Dyslexia can often be diagnosed once a child begins formal reading instruction, typically in the early years of primary school (around ages 5–7). At this stage, difficulties with recognising letters, learning phonics, and reading fluently may become noticeable. However, some early signs, such as delayed speech, trouble learning rhymes, or difficulty remembering sequences, can appear in preschool.
In Australia, assessments are commonly done by educational psychologists, speech pathologists, or specialists who can provide a formal diagnosis. The earlier dyslexia is identified, the sooner tailored interventions can begin, which greatly improves long-term outcomes.
