When is cerebral palsy (CP) diagnosed?

Cerebral palsy is usually diagnosed in the first two years of life, when delays in movement and development become noticeable. In severe cases, CP can sometimes be identified shortly after birth. For milder cases, diagnosis may be delayed until a child shows clear signs of motor difficulties, often around 18–24 months. Australian guidelines recommend early monitoring of high-risk infants, especially those born prematurely or with complications at birth, so therapy can begin as soon as possible.
