When was dyslexia first discovered?

Dyslexia was first recognised in the late 19th century. In 1881, Oswald Berkhan, a German physician, identified the condition, and by 1887, the term “dyslexia” was introduced by Rudolf Berlin, an ophthalmologist.

Early descriptions focused on children who were intelligent but struggled to read. Over time, research has expanded to better understand the neurological basis of dyslexia and effective teaching strategies.

Today in Australia, dyslexia is widely acknowledged in schools and supported through evidence-based approaches.
