When was selective mutism discovered?

Selective mutism was first formally recognised in the early 20th century under the term “aphasia voluntaria.” Later, it was renamed “elective mutism,” before experts understood that the condition was not a choice but an anxiety disorder.

The modern term “selective mutism” was adopted in the 1990s to better reflect its nature. Today in Australia, it is classified as an anxiety disorder and recognised in the DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders).
