Where does cerebral palsy affect the brain?

Cerebral palsy affects areas of the brain responsible for movement, balance, and coordination. These areas may include:

  • Motor cortex – controls voluntary muscle movements; damage leads to spastic CP.
  • Basal ganglia – regulates movement; damage causes dyskinetic CP with involuntary motions.
  • Cerebellum – controls balance and coordination; damage results in ataxic CP.

The type of CP depends on which part of the brain is injured. Importantly, CP does not affect the entire brain and does not worsen over time.
