Where is dyslexia listed in the DSM-5?

In the DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition), dyslexia is not listed as a standalone disorder. Instead, it falls under “Specific Learning Disorder with impairment in reading.” This category includes difficulties with reading accuracy, fluency, and comprehension. The DSM-5 recognises dyslexia as a neurodevelopmental disorder that requires evidence-based interventions rather than being linked to intelligence.

In Australia, the DSM-5 criteria are often used by psychologists and paediatricians when diagnosing dyslexia and related learning difficulties.
