Which test for Down syndrome?

There are two main types of tests for Down syndrome used in Australia:

  1. Screening tests (non-invasive):
First trimester combined screening – blood test and ultrasound to estimate risk.
Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT) – a maternal blood test that examines fragments of the baby’s DNA. This is highly accurate but still considered a screening test.
  2. Diagnostic tests (invasive):
Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS) – performed at 11–14 weeks, tests placental tissue.
Amniocentesis – performed at 15–20 weeks, tests amniotic fluid.
Screening shows the chance of Down syndrome, while diagnostic tests confirm with certainty.
