Who can conduct an ADHD test?

In Australia, ADHD can only be formally diagnosed by qualified health professionals such as paediatricians, child or adult psychiatrists, or clinical psychologists. These specialists are trained to assess complex developmental and behavioural conditions using validated tools and criteria from the DSM-5. For children, paediatricians and child psychologists often work in collaboration with schools and families. For adults, a psychiatrist or clinical psychologist will typically lead the process, often using interviews, self-report questionnaires, and developmental history. GP referrals are commonly needed, especially when seeking access to Medicare-subsidised services or NDIS supports. School counsellors and general psychologists may help identify signs but cannot give a formal diagnosis.
