Why does ADHD happen?

ADHD occurs due to a combination of factors—most notably, genetics and brain function. Studies show that people with ADHD have differences in brain structure, especially in areas responsible for attention, planning, and impulse control. Neurotransmitters like dopamine may not function efficiently in the ADHD brain.

The condition often runs in families, suggesting a strong genetic link. Environmental influences like low birth weight, prenatal exposure to nicotine, or early trauma can also contribute to ADHD risk. However, ADHD is not caused by poor parenting, sugar, or screen time—though these can affect symptom expression.
