Why is it called Down syndrome?

Down syndrome is named after Dr John Langdon Down, a British physician who first described the condition in 1866. Although Dr Down recognised the physical and developmental features, it was not until 1959 that researchers discovered the genetic cause—an extra chromosome 21.

The name is not about the condition being “down” in any negative sense; it simply honours the doctor who first studied and documented it.

Understanding the history of the name helps reduce stigma and ensures people use the correct terminology.
